Featured Friends: Wendy from The Frolic Project

London Eye

Hi fellow wanderlusters! If you want to get to know a super cool gal, you’re in the right place. Today I have one of my Insta-Gal-Pals here to grace us with her presence. Wendy and I’ve been following each other for a long time. We bonded over coffee (or food? Probably both!) and ended up trading numbers in hopes of getting together since we’re both in the L.A area. At this point she feels like one of my best friends seeing as we text each other…a lot, haha!

Anyway. She’s a fabulous person, a great friend and I knew my readers would enjoy getting to know her too! Read below as she discusses her travel experiences along with her beautiful pictures. Don’t forget to follow her on Instagram and visit her blog!

1. Tell us about yourself!

Hello readers! Lovely to meet you πŸ™‚ My name is Wendy and I am a solo female traveler. I just got back into traveling after taking several years off to focus on school and work. In the last 8 months, I went to Europe twice. My short trips abroad have encouraged me to take the leap of faith to pursue new endeavors. I recently quit the corporate life in pursuit of a more creative life at a fashion start-up company. With LA being my home base, I intend to make traveling as a part of my lifestyle. You will also most likely spot me frolicking around LA at different events πŸ™‚

2. I love the name, The Frolic Project. Was there a thought process behind it?

I created The Frolic Project on Instagram to remind myself to always add a bit of fun and adventure in my day to day life. For a while I felt like I was stuck in a rut. All I did was work to pay the bills. Life became exhausting and stressful when I became worried all the time about materialistic things. I lost sight of what was important to me. A big part of me was asking “Is this it?! This is life?” I was having a quarter life crisis after college but didn’t know it. I kept on reminiscing about my past travels and wishing I could go back, while failing to see that I could still have adventures in my own city. One day I woke up and realized that I live in the wonderful city of Los Angeles, one of the biggest tourist destination in the world! From that realization I decided to look at my life from a different perspective. I started going to fun events around town and visited many touristy places. My lifestyle and attitude changed shortly after I had the epiphany that I had what I needed right here. The Frolic Project is a portfolio of gratitude.

3. Where’s the most memorable place you’ve been to and why?

The city of London, where I did my first solo traveling, will always have a special place in my heart. You never forget your first love, right? London is the place for many of my ‘firsts’. In the 11 days I spent in London, I learned how to take public transportation, had my first cider at a proper English pub, visited many of the historical places I had only read about in school, fell madly in love for the first time, fell apart from a broken heart, and most importantly, I felt liberated in a way I had never felt before. I was 22 and it was my first time I felt empowered as a young, independent woman. That trip changed my life.

4. You seem perfectly comfortable traveling solo. What are some pros and cons to doing so?

Here’s a secret I’ll share with you, I get scared before every trip, haha! There had been moments when I questioned my own sanity for traveling alone. With that being said, here is my list of the pros and cons of being a solo traveler.

Pros:

– Meeting other solo travelers and learning their stories. Everyone has a story! Plus, when you’re a solo traveler, it’s easier to meet people because you don’t have your friends to cling on to.

– Not having to worry about the concept of time. When you travel by yourself, you decide how to spend the time you have!

– Having time to reflect. I know this one is cheesy but when you’re stuck with only yourself, you have a lot of time to think about who you are as a person. I think some people get uncomfortable with this, but I welcome it. I need to figure out what I want and what makes me happy without all  the trivial distractions.

– Your trip, your budget! While some people spend most of their budget on shopping or nice accommodation, I tend to spend most of my money on food and attractions! I don’t mind sleeping in a shared room with strangers if it meant that I can splurge on a nice dinner at a restaurant with a cool concept.

– You can be whoever you want. No expectations.

Cons:

– Being alone feels lonely. That one is obvious.

– Having to be extra cautious when you go out to experience the night life.

– No pictures of yourself or your friends.

– Not being able to explain why something is amazing. You wish your friends and family were there to see it for themselves.

5. Who is your favorite airline and why?

I love how modern, innovative, and fun Virgin Airline is for domestic travels. I’m a sucker for eye candy! For international travels, Norwegian Airline has made it possible for me to travel to Europe twice in one year because of their affordable flights. Also, they have more leg room!

6. What are your travel
plans for the rest of the year?

I want to focus on places that are closer to California so I can do weekend getaways! So far I have plans to travel to Vancouver, Chicago, Denver, and possibly Austin. We’ll see where I’ll end up though, I’m a bit whimsical πŸ™‚

7. Where are 3 places you dream of traveling to?

Gah! So many dreamy places, not enough money or time! Hmm I guess my top 3 right now would be Tokyo, the many islands off the coast of Croatia, and the wine region of Cinque Terre!

8. We share the same love (obsession?) for coffee. Tell us your top 3 coffee spots in Los Angeles!

This question is the hardest to answer out of all the questions! Unfair, haha! Hmmm, if I were to recommend the 3 coffee shops you should go to in LA, I would say you should definitely visit Proof in Atwater Village, Eightfold in Echo Park, and Stumptown in DTLA. All 3 of these coffee shops have amazing tasting coffee and delicious treats to snack on!

9. We know your Instgram feed is gorgeous but on your blog, what do you like to write about?

This is embarrassing because I’m an amateur when it comes to the blogging world. So far my blog consist of a bunch of random postings. I’ve shared travel stories, travel photos, confessions of failed crushes, and generally my everyday life. This question reminded me that I need to get it together and start posting weekly! My goal regarding blogging is to blog one adventure post per week.

10. What are some tips you have for us?

Top 3 things to add to your suitcase to make your life easier while on the road:

– fully charged battery for your phone.

– dry shampoo.

– flip flops for wearing in the showers!
