Diamond Head Hike Honolulu

Diamond Head Hike
The STUNNING view from the top!

If I could recommend only one hike in all of Hawaii, it would be the Diamond Head hike. I mentioned in my First Timer’s Guide to Honolulu, a post I wrote 7 years ago and continue to rave about it.

Diamond Head Monument State Park is a quick car or trolley ride from Waikiki and is one of the most beautiful hikes in Oahu, nay, Hawaii.

Oh, and don’t forget to get shave ice as a treat after your hike! Click here for the 5 best shave ice in Oahu (including the one I went to right after this hike).

Tickets & Parking at Diamond Head

Diamond Head State Monument Entrance
Trail entrace (past the ticket booth and parking lot)

Tickets are $5 per person and $10 for parking.

You must have advanced reservations to enter the Diamond Head State Monument park. You can make reservations here for either walk-in or walk-in and parking. I saw a lot of people walking in, I honestly am not sure where they parked outside the park as it’s nestled in a residential area. I highly recommend paying for parking in the park as it’s only $10, conveniently located by the trail entrance, and safe!

Now let’s chat about the Diamond Head hike trail!

Diamond Head hike stairs
Keep in mind there’s a lot of stairs!

While the hiking trail is considered, “easy”, I would be cautious of that subjective term. I haven’t shared much of my personal life but as someone that went up the trail 100 lbs ago, it was extremely difficult at that fitness level (which was poor). Now, 100 lbs lighter, and as someone that exercises 5-6 times a week, it was “easier” but would not say it’s a cakewalk. Especially with a 500 ft elevation and humidity, it truly depends on your fitness level, so be aware of that.

The trail itself consists of rocky paths, steep hills, and a number of steep stairs (more than you’d expect from a hike). Proper shoes are highly recommended!

Views

Diamond Head hike views
Feels so rewarding!

There are several lookouts starting after three-quarters of a mile or so before reaching the top. Diamond Head used to be a military lookout post, and remnants of that still exist. You can even go into a couple of floors of the man-made lookout. The several lookouts are also great spots to catch your breath!

Once you finally reach the top, the views are absolutely breathtaking. The 360 views of Honolulu and the clear blue ocean hugging Waikiki.

I got a t-shirt and the cutest Hello Kitty pins!

I’m all about souvenirs and memorabilia for everywhere I travel and for every accomplishment. The park has a cute little shop at the entrance (Visitor Center) where you can get souvenirs for yourself or others! I got myself a t-shirt and a Hello Kitty pin (as seen in the picture) to add to my pin collection on my backpack. You can also grab a bottle of water or snacks in case you forgot to pack them!
