Hanauma Bay Snorkeling

Headed to Hanauma Bay? I’m sharing everything you need to know about Hanauma Bay snorkeling, Hanauma bay reservations, rental gear, and more! Let’s get right into it.

Since COVID, a lot has changed everywhere, and I’m happy to provide everything you need to know before visiting Hanauma Bay for snorkeling in Oahu, Hawaii. I’ve been snorkeling at Hanauma Bay since I was a baby and rules and processes are very different in 2022!

However, that doesn’t change the fact that Hanauma Bay is a must visit when you’re in Oahu. Click here to see more Hawaii posts (new and old) if you need inspiration!

Hanauma Bay Reservations

As mentioned above, you must make reservations to enjoy Hanauma Bay. Reservation blocks open up 2 days in advance at 7:00AM Hawaii Time. You can click here to do so! Another option (that I do not recommend) is going there as a walk-in as early as 6:45 AM. Note that there are very limited walk-in tickets available and run out very quickly. The online reservations go quickly as well, so make sure you set a reminder alert 2 days in advance!

Parking

Parking at Hanauma Bay is simple, and reasonable. Once you enter the park property, you’ll pay the attendant the parking fee (which was $8 for us, and $3 for locals). There’s ample parking so even if your reservation is in the afternoon, you won’t have any issues parking.

If you don’t have snorkeling gear and you don’t necessarily need to buy one to use forever, just rent them when you get there! While the ABC Stores might tempt you with $10 snorkel gear, trust me when I say they aren’t great quality. The rental prices are not bad, and you don’t have to carry around bulky items!

If you’re already a good swimmer, I would recommend just renting the Mask and Snorkel set. If you’re not too confident, grab the Premium Package!

While I think most people at Hanauma Bay are trustworthy, I do love that they have lockers that you can rent for peace of mind.

The Experience

Hanauma Bay Snorkeling
Beautiful day for snorkeling!

Now that you’re prepared, let me share a few tips about making your experience memorable at Hanauma Bay.

I don’t have to tell you how you cannot stand while in the water due to live reefs, because you’ll learn about that and other regulations in the introduction video you’ll watch prior to entering the park. However, I want to emphasize how important it is to respect the rules and culture of the land so everyone can continue to enjoy the magical experience that is snorkeling at Hanauma Bay.

Snacks from Foodland
Snacking between snorkel sessions!

Since I always plan on spending a good 4-5 hours there, I bring plenty of liquids and snacks. I stop by Foodland on the way, and stock up. If you haven’t been to Foodland yet, I highly recommend a visit! It’s a Hawaii-born grocery store with everything you’d regularly need, plus local items.

If you have a GoPro (or this one that’s a quarter of the price and just as good), bring it with you! You’ll take incredible photos. Or, buy the waterproof pouches for your phone like this one that I have!

Oh, and don’t forget to bring your own towels! I generally bring 2-3 towels per person. They have showers and restrooms on property if you need to get cleaned up.

Lastly, enjoy! The fish you get to see are magical, it’ll make you feel like you’re swimming in an aquarium. So many memories to be made!
